WHEN A DOG OR CAT FOOD IS RECALLED
This Concern is too important to have an expiration date
Although it does not happen often, it DOES happen. And when it does, it is important to be aware of the seriousness not only for the pets but for children.
Many times the recall is because salmonella has been detected in the pet food. You can’t see, smell, or taste it. It is a common bacterial disease affecting the intestinal tract. It is also present in their feces.
IF YOUR PET HAS A SALMONELLA INFECTION They may be lethargic, have diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some dogs may have decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy dogs can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your dog has consumed a recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
IF YOUR CHILD HAS A SALMONELLA INFECTION As salmonella can affect animals eating the product, it can also be a risk to children.
Symptoms Your child might complain of stomach flu. The symptoms can be diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, and/or headache. Blood in the stool can develop 6 to 72 hours after exposure.
Signs and symptoms of salmonella infection generally last a few days to a week without specific treatment. Diarrhea may last up to 10 days, but it may take several months before the bowels return to usual stool habits. Some children have no symptoms. Most children only need fluids and recover in less than a week.
More Severe Symptoms However, contact your physician if your child’s symptoms last longer than a few days or have any of the following symptoms. Symptoms: high fever, bloody stools, or severe dehydration such as urinating less than usual, dark-colored urine, or dry mouth. Severe infections may require medical care including IV fluids and sometimes antibiotics.
